A chance to meet and greet NDS’s new case manager Jenny Hochstetler Spicher, Jenny will give a brief introduction to herself and then speak about the role and challenges of being a case manager. From referrals to intakes to scheduling, Jenny will explain what goes on “behind-the-scenes” to make our mediations happen. Following her presentation, Tom Gould will then be leading a discussion on opening statements at the mediation session. What all should be included in your remarks as you begin the mediation? Cross Cultural Competencies: Mediation and the African American Experience
To help clients reach effective resolutions, mediators must provide a positive, productive environment for all participants. The cultural context of participants in mediation can determine how they understand, interpret, and analyze their circumstances and the alternatives available to them. Cultural characteristics can be differentiated between several dimensions and aspects; the ability to perceive and to cope with them is one of the basic elements of cross-cultural competence.
These include but are not limited to how one understands: the individual within the community, the roles of men and women, differences in power, time, space, non-verbal communication, and values orientation.
The workshop will help participants explore their own cultural context and how it relates specifically to the African-American cultural experience in our area.
